Carving stone into sculpture is an activity older than civilization itself. Prehistoric sculptures were usually
human forms, such as
the Venus of Willendorf, the faceless statues of the Cycladic cultures, Buddha images etc.
Later cultures devised animal,
human-animal and abstract forms in stone. In the past of human history,
sculptors used hammer and chisel as the basic tools for
carving various kinds of stones such as chalk, soapstone,
limestone, marbles, granite, gemstones were carved into fine pieces
of art. South East Asia created some of the
most fine stone carvings of images from Buddha, disciples, and abstract forms.
